This Beetle Battle Takes the Baja 500 to the Next Level

Since the Sixties, Volkswagens have been the heart of Baja racing. This Beetle battle is unlike any before it.

Eric Solorzano’s garage is a working race shop that feels more like a church. Speed is worshipped here. So is cold beer, loud Santana, the love of friends and family, and the famously rough city of Tijuana, Mexico. If there’s an altar, it’s the 1969 Volkswagen Beetle that, at this moment, is getting its final race prep for the 2024 Baja 500. It’s the Wednesday night before race weekend, and close to two dozen guys are rushing around, most with a wrench in one hand and a cold one in the other. All of it is the making of Solorzano himself—the greatest Mexican champion you’ve never heard of.
